Google Ads in the Marketing Command Center

Advertising spend is only meaningful next to the results it produced. Datok reads campaign performance reporting from the Google Ads accounts a customer authorizes, and reports it alongside website analytics and organic search so a business can see cost, outcome, and return in one place.

Reporting and analytics only

Datok uses the authorized Google Ads connection only for reporting and analytics. Datok does not create or modify campaigns, ad groups, ads, keywords, bids, budgets, or billing, and it cannot spend money in a connected account.

Why Datok needs the Google Ads API.

Datok is a marketing analytics, intelligence, and reporting platform. Google Ads holds the advertising investment side of a customer’s marketing picture. The Google Ads API allows Datok to retrieve authorized advertising performance data directly and consistently for scheduled reporting.

Spend has to be exact

Return on ad spend, cost per acquisition, and channel efficiency are all division by cost. Manually re-keyed or exported figures drift, and a number an executive cannot trust is worse than no number.

It has to arrive on a schedule

Reporting is only useful if it is current. The API lets Datok refresh authorized accounts automatically instead of asking a person to export a spreadsheet every morning.

It has to join other sources

Advertising cost only becomes insight when it sits next to the sessions, conversions, and organic performance it influenced. That join requires campaign-level, date-level data.

What happens after a customer authorizes Google Ads.

Every step is initiated by the customer, and every step is visible to them inside Datok.

  1. 1

    Connect Google Account

An authorized user opens Settings → Integrations in Datok and chooses to connect Google Ads.

  2. 2

    Google OAuth authorization

Datok redirects to Google’s own consent screen. The user signs in with Google and reviews the Google Ads permissions requested by Datok. Datok never sees or stores the user’s Google password.

  3. 3

    Discover authorized accounts

After consent, Datok lists only the Google Ads accounts that the authenticated Google user is already permitted to access.

  4. 4

    User selects and maps accounts

The user chooses which of those advertising accounts Datok should read, and maps each one to the brand or business unit it belongs to.

  5. 5

    Datok retrieves reporting data

For the selected accounts only, Datok requests campaign-level performance reporting for a bounded date range, on a schedule and on demand.

  6. 6

    Data is processed

Costs are converted from micros, dates and currencies are reconciled, and campaigns are matched to the channels and business units the customer has defined.

  7. 7

    Marketing Command Center and reports

The normalized results appear alongside analytics and organic search data as unified spend, performance, and return reporting.

Exactly which Google Ads data Datok requests.

Datok requests campaign-level performance reporting and nothing else. This is the complete list of fields, and what each one is used for.

Field requestedWhat it is used for
campaign.id, campaign.nameIdentify each campaign consistently across syncs and reports.
campaign.advertising_channel_typeGroup spend and performance by channel — Search, Display, Shopping, Video.
segments.dateBuild daily trends and period comparisons.
metrics.cost_microsReport advertising investment, and act as the denominator for ROAS and cost-per-acquisition.
metrics.impressions, metrics.clicksReport reach and engagement, and derive click-through rate and cost per click.
metrics.conversions, metrics.conversions_valueReport conversion outcomes where the advertiser has conversion tracking configured, and derive return on ad spend.

Reporting Datok produces from it

  • Advertising spend by campaign, channel, brand, and period
  • Impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and cost per click
  • Conversions and conversion value where the advertiser tracks them
  • Return on ad spend and cost per acquisition
  • Daily trends, period-over-period comparison, and historical reporting
  • Paid performance next to analytics and organic search performance

What Datok does not access

  • Billing details, payment methods, or invoices
  • Campaign creation, editing, budget changes, or bidding — Datok does not perform these operations.
  • Personal data about the people who saw or clicked an ad
  • Any Google Ads account the authenticated user is not already permitted to access
  • Google account passwords, which are never requested or stored

Google Ads is one part of a cross-channel picture.

Datok reads three Google sources, each answering a different question. The value is in reporting them together.

  1. Google Ads

What did we invest, and what did that investment return?

  2. Google Analytics 4

What did people do on the site once they arrived?

  3. Google Search Console

What are we earning organically, without paying for it?

Normalized together in the Datok Source of Truth™, these answer questions no single platform can: whether paid search overlaps with traffic the site earns organically, how advertising investment relates to website revenue and performance across channels, and where marketing investment may need closer review.

Awaiting provider approval

Current status.

The Google Ads connector is implemented and tested end to end: authorization, account discovery, error handling, retrieval, normalization, and reporting. Retrieving data from production Google Ads accounts additionally requires Google to approve Datok’s Google Ads API access, which is pending. Datok does not claim live production Google Ads reporting until that approval is granted and verified. Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console are available today.
